Getting into trouble with Amy Stewart
Since Fine Gardening is located in Connecticut, it's not often that we are visited by fun gardening friends from other areas of the country. So we were thrilled to learn that Amy Stewart of Garden Rant infamy would be swinging through earlier this week to do a reading from her new book, Wicked Plants, at a local bookstore.
Stay the *bleep* away from my peas!
If I actually get to harvest any snow peas this year, it will be nothing short of a miracle. Rearing them has been a struggle from the start. First, thinking I was smart, I decided to sow my pea...
Fine Gardening goes to Fenway
Two things let me know it's spring each year. The first is the witch hazel blooming in my garden. The second is opening day for the Boston Red Sox.
A new hosta cultivar
Ripken the Sussex spaniel likes to hide out in the hostas.
I'm in love with my mud boots
They're ugly, they smell kind of bad, they're well-worn--but I love them.
Does this make me a bad gardener?
I'm thrilled that the garden season is on temporary hiatus. OK, thrilled might be too strong of a word...I'm relieved. Truth be told, this past spring/summer/fall kicked my butt.
My bittersweet mistake
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and stay away from the bittersweet.

Re: What are the best hand pruners?
I’m actually a HUGE fan of my Smith and Hawken pruners. They have all the same bells and whistles as Felcos--but have orange handles instead of red. I was thoroughly offended when a friend once called them, “Felco-Knockoffs.”
