A colony of bright green Kerria japonica stands sentry duty as it awaits its soft yellow blooms.
Mr. Toad guards the dormant Acanthus mollis in this shady area. He warns me not to dig it up during fall and spring planting frenzies.
Thumper, always alert for little visitors to the childrens garden, watches over the animal bed, where each plant has an animal name. Lambs ears, catmint, zebra grass, elephant ears, snapdragon, beebalm, butterfly bush, turtlehead, leopard lily, tiger lily, unicorn grass, monkey grass etc...
Poncirus trifoliata Flying Dragon, wields his wicked claws in a mixed shrub border. The beauty of the curving thorns and twisted limbs are much more visible in winter.
When all the other ferns have lain flat or disappeared into dormancy, the Autumn fern, stands up to anything.

In zone 8 we rarely see a white winter wonderland, but our garden guardians always bring a smile and the promise of colors and aromas soon to come.
